I recently came across this National Geographic special and couldn't take my eyes off of it.  When the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster happened, I was in 9th grade.  I remember the teacher, Mr. Smith,  wheeling a TV into class so that we could watch coverage of that tragic event.

Watching this special now, as a 46-year-old, gives me a whole new perspective and sense of loss than what I had back then.  My emotions hadn't matured yet as I was just a teen.  I didn't know what it was like to be a parent, so I didn't feel the sense of horror you see on Christa McAuliffe's parents' faces in this video.  Now it hits me and I choke back tears.

I'm not posting this video to make you feel bad.  I just wanted to share with you what I think is a well-done look back at that event which was a prominent part of many of our lives.

Ironically, I was on the radio in Columbia, SC when the second shuttle disaster happened.  That was a very surreal day on the air for me...
