On Tuesday (July 1st), the Navy promoted the first woman to the rank of four-star admiral, the service's highest rank.

Admiral Michelle Janine Howard will serve as the vice chief of naval operations, making her the Number 2 admiral in the Navy behind the chief of naval operations, Admiral Jonathan Greenert.

Howard graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1982, and has served in the Navy for 32 years.

In 1999, she became the first African-American woman to command a Navy ship.
