Our baby was born extremely premature at 25 weeks on August 11th, 2025. She was 1lb 9oz. I remember thinking when she was born that there's no way something so small can survive. I watched as they placed her in an incubator while her face turned blue because she wasn't breathing, and all I could think about was how was I going to tell her mother that she didn't make it? Thankfully, that conversation never had to happen because of the great NICU team at Memorial Hospital and the support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire.
After realizing she would have a very long stay in the NICU, we contacted Ronald McDonald House and they reached back out to us that same night. We met with their staff, and we initially turned down the offer to stay because of our conflicting work schedules. Within an hour, they reached back out to us and assured us they could support our particular requirements. We gladly accepted. Staying at RMHC allowed us to always be within walking distance of our daughter and be much more involved in her care. We were able to stay as late as we wanted in the NICU without having to worry about a long drive back home. We never had to worry about food thanks to all the great volunteers who provided meals. The entire staff was very helpful, especially Willow the therapy dog. She is a great receiver of belly rubs.
After 83 days in the NICU, we were finally able to take our little girl home. She is still on oxygen, but has progressed amazingly well. She is now over 7LBS and growing more every day. We would like to extend a huge thank you to RMHC of Savannah, the staff and Willow. You all made a very stressful and uncertain time in our lives much more tolerable.
