Trump's Visit to the U.K. Continues With Meeting With Theresa May

U.S. President Trump's State Visit To UK - Day Two

During the second day of a state visit to the United Kingdom President Donald Trump urged the departing Prime Minister Theresa May to 'stick around' so that the U.S. and the U.K. could negotiate a new trade deal after Britain untangles itself from the European Union.

Trump, who is spending three days in London with first lady Melania Trump and his adult children, met with Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday

During a Tuesday press conference with the embattled Prime Minister, Trump said the United States was committed to negotiating a "phenomenal" trade deal with Britain once Brexit was completed.

May, who is scheduled to leave office on Friday, said she believed it was in the country's best interest to leave the EU with an agreement - something she had failed to do during her tenure as PM. She added that she would not take Trump's suggestion to 'stick around' after so she could participate in negotiating a new trade deal.

Trump told reporters that Britain leaving the EU would be "very good" for the country.

“I think it will happen, and it probably should happen,” Trump told reporters.

The three-day trip is aimed at celebrating the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States. Trump is also scheduled to fly to Ireland and France where he will attend bilateral meetings and a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. The president arrived in Britain on Monday where he was treated to a tour of Westminster Abbey and a lavish dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth the II at Buckingham Palace.
