Michael Phelps has been dethroned in his signature event by 19-year-old Hungarian Kristof Milak. Milak shattered Phelps' world record in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:50.73 at the world championships in Gwangju, South Korea. His time was .78 seconds faster than Phelps' previous record of 1:51.51, which the Olympian set at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships.
"I tried to switch off everything, and I tried not to think of swimming at all before the race," Milak said after his record-setting victory. "It's a tremendous honor to set such a great record."
Phelps initially set the world record for the 200-meter butterfly in 2001, when he was just 15 years old. He only got better at the event, breaking his own world record in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Milak also became the first teenager to win a world title in the event since Phelps accomplished the feat in 2003.
