NewsRadio Savannah introduces you to the Powell family and their Ronald McDonald House Of The Coastal Empire experience:
Our twin boys were born at 32 weeks. As a result of their premature lungs, the doctors told us they would need to stay in the NICU at the Dwaine and Cynthia Willet Children’s Hospital in Memorial Hospital for several weeks until their lungs could mature and they were breathing well. We wanted and needed to be at the hospital every day with our babies, but we live almost 2 hours away. We were told by the nurses in the NICU about the Ronald McDonald House. It was such a blessing to our family to be able to stay there while our babies were in the NICU. Because of the close proximity of the Ronald McDonald House to the hospital, I was able to spend every day at the hospital with our twins.
During our stay at the Ronald McDonald House, we didn't have to worry about lodging expenses or meals. Volunteers cooked and provided meals every night of the week.It was such a blessing to not have to worry about cooking or eating out so that we could just focus on our babies. The staff was super helpful and made us feel welcome our entire stay.
After six weeks, our babies were finally released from the hospital. We were so happy to be going home with our sweet babies. While they did have to go home on oxygen, which was a learning curve for our family, they were both weaned off supplemental oxygen and breathing well on their own by three months. Today, they are healthy, happy 10-month-old beautiful baby boys.
I cannot say enough good things about the Ronald McDonald House. They were a huge blessing to our family during a very difficult time in our lives. A NICU stay is filled with lots of ups and downs. Thankfully, the Ronald McDonald House helped make our time there, as well as for many others,a lot easier.
