"Cocaine Babe" Says She Smuggled Drugs For Instagram Likes

A 24-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to smuggling cocaine while on a 51-day cruise from the United Kingdom to Sydney told the Australian court that she received money, gifts, and trips from her "sugar daddy" in exchange for helping him smuggle the illegal drugs around the world. Melina Roberge explained that in addition to the perks she was set to earn over $100,000 for her role in smuggling over $20 million worth of cocaine. She said her job was to "be there and look like I was on holiday and look like a cover for everyone else." Roberge told the court that she loved "tak[ing] photos of myself in exotic locations for 'likes' and attention."

Roberge and her cruise partner Isabelle Lagacé were arrested along with 63-year-old Andre Tamine when authorities discovered over 200 pounds worth of cocaine hidden in their cabins. Police said the drugs could be worth between $20 and $30 million. Police had flagged the two ladies as "high-risk travelers" and the cruise ship was under surveillance because of the large number of ports it was scheduled to stop at during the trip.

Lagacé was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for her role in the drug smuggling scheme. Roberge and Tamine will learn their sentence at a later date.
