SCARY: Airplane loses engine mid-flight!

A United Airlines flight that took off from San Francisco around 9 a.m Tuesday morning managed to safely land at Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport after one of its engines failed over the Pacific.

Passengers aboard United Flight Airlines 1175 tweeted photos and video of the Boeing 777's engine that appeared to be missing its cowling.

The airliner is a wide-body twin engine jet that is one of the most advanced jetliners in the air today. The 777 can even fly on just one engine for more than three hours over water - a feature that likely came in handy today.

An FAA official told NBC News the pilot declared an emergency due to a vibration in its right engine, and landed on the runway in Hawaii without incident or injury. Further reports say the engine did not appear to have come apart, and was operating normally - without the casing.

FlightRadar24 records the flight taking off from San Francisco just after 9 a.m. and landing in Hawaii around 2:42 PST.

The FAA is investigating the incident.
