UPDATE: Tornado hits Garden City

5/5/2017 UPDATE:  Hwy. 80 in Garden City is reopened, but folks are being advised to watch out for debris and downed powers lines.  Please also don't stop in the middle of the road to look and take photos because several accidents almost happened because of this.  Pull over to the side of the road if you feel the need to look and take pics.  We're talking about Hwy. 80 between Chatham Pkwy. and Burnsed Ave.

The National Weather Service will be here today to determine if it really was a tornado that hit Garden City, as well as the strength of the severe weather event.  Insurance adjusters and contractors will also be in the area, so please beware.  At least two buildings, including Advanced Auto Parts on Hwy. 80, are a total loss.  Several tractor trailers were knocked onto their sides.  One man inside his TT cab was injured, but reportedly not badly.

Thankfully, only a few people were hurt and noone was killed.  Our radio station sustained minimal damage.  The tornado reportedly started right across the parking lot on Alfred St.  See photos below...

5/4/2017 -Mark Robertson from our sister-station 98.7 The River sent me this at 8:15:  "I just got off the phone with Barbara O'Neal from Garden City police department and she confirms it was a tornado that was going down Alfred Street apparently it was seen going from Roger Wood across 80 and did damage to the shopping center across the street or I should say around the corner from us. As of right now Highway 80 is closed from Alfred Street all the way down to burnsed Boulevard which is down near the Arby's restaurant. She is going to keep me posted. "

Our stations are right there on Alfred St.  It's amazing we only had a few tree limbs come down.  The home across the street was not so lucky...

Advanced Auto Parts took the brunt of the damage.  See photo galleries below.
