After a week-long roll-out consisting of snakes, snakes and more snakes, Taylor Swift has released the first single from her upcoming new album. And she is not ready to make nice on “Look What You Made Me Do,” the biting lead single of her highly anticipated sixth album, Reputation. Jack Antonoff, who worked with Swift on her last album, “1989,” co-wrote and co-produced the song.
The lyric video was released at midnight and features – you guessed it – snakes. While not mentioning Kanye West by name, the song’s lyrics appear to reference her long, public feud with the rapper. As soon as the song dropped, fans latched onto the specific lyrics “I don’t like your little games / I don’t like your tilted stage” and “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now / Why? ‘Cause she’s dead.” West used a tilted stage while on his Saint Pablo tour.
And last summer, Swift’s feud with West exploded after Kim Kardashian West leaked a phone call between Taylor and her husband on Snapchat. In the edited clips of the call, Swift appeared to give West her blessing over a line referencing her in his song, “Famous.”
Meanwhile, some fans believe the lyric “Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)” is a reference to longtime frenemy Katy Perry, who released a single named “Bon Appétit” earlier this year and the video featured a ready-to-be-devoured Perry.
Reputation will be released on November 10th and is available for pre-order. Swift has partnered with Target to release two 72-page magazines alongside the album that will include “personal poetry and photos, artwork by Taylor, handwritten lyrics, exclusive poster” and photos from the “Look What You Made Me Do” video shoot.
While Taylor has yet to reveal specific tour dates, she also announced a partnership with Ticketmaster Verified Fan, a new program that attempts to block scalpers and bots from obtaining tickets. The singer also released a video explaining the process. Her website, taylorswift.com, is back live with all the info.
While many were hoping Taylor would be performing her new tune at the VMAs this Sunday, MTV executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic said: “She has been on the show many times and [has] performed with a new album coming, but not this time… I definitely wish she was coming on and performing.” However, she still might make it to the ceremony. Taylor is nominated with Zayn Malik for Best Collaboration for their Fifty Shades Darker song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.”
