ELTON JOHN announces his farewell tour!

Elton John announced yesterday (January 24th) that later this year he'll embark on a three-year, five-continent farewell tour, which will play over 300 shows. Elton, along with moderator Anderson Cooper, announced the trek, dubbed, the "Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour" at Manhattan's Gotham Hall. A newly produced animated intro to the event recreated key moments in Elton's career -- including his 1970 U.S. debut at L.A.'s Troubadour club and his sold-out 1975 extravaganza at Dodger Stadium. The tour will kick off on September 8th in Allentown, Pennsylvania and will wrap in early-2020. At yesterday's event, Elton performed solo renditions of "Tiny Dancer" and "I'm Still Standing."

In the press release announcing the farewell tour, Elton explained, "Performing live fuels me and I’m ecstatic and humbled to continue to play to audiences across the globe. I plan to bring the passion and creativity that has entertained my fans for decades to my final tour. After the tour finishes, I’m very much looking forward to closing off that chapter of my life by saying farewell to life on the road. I need to dedicate more time to raising my children." Elton and David Furnish, who have been together since 1993, entered into a civil partnership in 2005 and married in 2014. They are the parents of two sons, seven-year-old Zachary and four-and-a-half-year-old Elijah.

  • In addition to North America Elton's final tour will take in stops in Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Russia, Hungary, Latvia, Portugal, Lithuania, Estonia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Israel, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • Elton explained yesterday what the upcoming three-year-tour symbolizes: "The announcement is that I'm not going to be touring anymore, apart from the last tour, which is going to start in September of this year, and it'll be a global tour -- and it'll be the last time that I will be touring and traveling the world, because my priorities have changed in my life. 10 years ago, if you had said I'm going to stop touring, I'd have said, 'No, no -- I'm a working musician I always play' -- but, we had children and it changed our lives. And in 2015, David and I sat down with a school schedule and I said, 'I don't wanna miss too much of this.'"
  • Elton pointed out that his live career is far different than nearly every one of his peers in terms of sweat and actual miles logged across the decades: "I've been working constantly. I'm not this person who does tours, like, every couple of years. I've been on the road every year since I made it in 1970 -- apart from one year when I got sober, I took a year off -- I've been a constant working musician. I don't often play big cities, I go out and play middle cities; little places -- Montana, Vermont. All those kind of places, which I wanna go to and play to people that normally can't get a chance to see me. But this is a 300-date tour. In the press today in England, of course they say that I'm retiring because of ill-health and if you're going to do 300 shows, you're not in ill-health. And I thought the time is right to say thank you to all my fans around the world. It doesn't mean to say that I'm still not going to be creative, but I'm not going to travel anymore."
  • Elton John will perform on Sunday night (January 28th) at The 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Elton, who'll sing one song on his own and another with Miley Cyrus, will be honored on January 30th with a Grammy tribute show, Elton John: I’m Still Standing, which will be filmed at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden and aired at a later date.
  • In addition to Cyrus, the Elton tribute will feature performances by Kesha, Miranda Lambert, John Legend, Little Big Town, Chris Martin, Maren Morris, Sam Smith, and Keith Urban.
  • The 60th Annual Grammy Awards will air live on CBS from New York City's Madison Square.
