10/18/2018 — Today, Chatham County was designated an official Coast Guard Community during a ceremony at the Savannah Trade and International Convention Center.
U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Karl Schultz came here to personally bestow this hard-earned honor upon Chatham County (see video below).
Designating an official Coast Guard community requires approval from Congress by the Commandant of the Coast Guard to Chatham County. The designation is predicated on Chatham County’s ability to erect monuments to the Coast Guard, organize civic celebrations and offer special recognition and support Coast Guard morale, welfare, and recreational initiatives. A Coast Guard community’s designation is active for 5 years, at which time it is reevaluated based on the support rendered since designation.
