Seoul's Mayor Found Dead Hours After His Daughter Reported Him Missing

Nearly seven hours after the mayor of Seoul, South Korea, was reported missing authorities found his body in the hills near the cityPark Won-soon, 64, was reported missing by his daughter on Thursday (July 9) after he left her a "will like message." His daughter did not provide details about what her father said in the message.

Park did not show up for work on Thursday and canceled his official schedule, which included meeting a presidential official.

Nearly 600 police officers and firefighters took part in the search for Park. Investigators said he was recorded by surveillance cameras at Waryong Park and they managed to track the location of his cell phone before it turned off.

Officials found his body in the mountains in the northern part of the city. They did not provide any details about the circumstances of his death.

According to the New York Times, Park's death comes one day after a secretary in the mayor's office made claims that he had been sexually harassing her since 2017.

Park was elected mayor in a landslide victory in 2011 and was considered one of the most powerful politicians in South Korea. He was seen as a serious contender to run for the presidency in 2022.
