State to Make Beach Renourishment Funds Available

As part of a mid-year budget adjustment, the state legislature is considering including $10 million in the budget for beach re-nourishment. County officials were told during a recent legislative trip to Atlanta that St. Simons Island and Tybee Island are the only two places that would be eligible for the money if it is approved by the legislature. Tybee Island has had a beach re-nourishment program underway since the mid-1970s in which they put sand on the beach about every 7 years. Tybee Mayor Jason Buelterman said 70% of their re-nourishment funding comes from the federal government. The rest is a combination of state, county and city money with the city of Tybee putting in 15 to 20% of the local share. Glynn County Commissioner Peter Murphy, who is enthusiastically supportive of the project, pointed out that this funding is state money, not county property taxes.
